Built for the people in the dark part of the room.
MMCX LLC builds software for the engineers who configure, patch and fix the IP systems that carry audio and video.
Why this exists
Position
Dante, NDI, SMPTE 2110, Q-SYS, AES67 — the protocols behind modern AV are network protocols, and they bring network problems with them. Multicast that floods a switch. A clock that will not lock. A VLAN that swallows a feed an hour before doors.
Most of the people who fix those things learned on the job, from whoever was standing nearest, or from a spec document written for somebody else. That is a poor way to learn something a show depends on.
So the software is built for the conditions: time pressure, no reliable connection, and no room to get it wrong twice.
Founder
Alexander Thomson
Background in broadcast engineering and live event production. Octet Operator started as a private set of notes and calculators kept for his own gigs, on the view that AV network engineers deserved better than reading RFCs in a hallway and hoping.
MMCX LLC works across California — Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.
The name
MMCX = 2110
MM·C·X = 2110
M is a thousand, C a hundred, X ten. SMPTE ST 2110 is the standard that put professional video on IP, and it is what the company is named after.
